Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle, has said that the March 3, 2016 unrest at Camp Street Prison could have resulted in one of the biggest prison breaks in Guyana’s recent history.Fire Chief Marlon GentleThe Fire Chief made this disclosure to the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the Camp Street Georgetown Prison riot. He disclosed that there was mock drill for fire at the facility about a week before the actual riot but that could not have prepared him for the trauma which unfolded that day. Benjamin described the incident as “just gruesome.”He said that many of the inmates were burnt beyond recognition. Benjamin said that in his estimation the inmates were somehow attempting to impede on their operation but they “backed off, “after they realised the danger of the situation.Under Cross examination by Attorney for the Guyana Bar Association, (GBA) Glen Hanoman, the witness was grilled about the authenticity of his statements.? Hanoman asked the witness, whether he could have seen from which direction the bricks were being thrown.??
