The Ministry of Education has made good on its promise to forcefully take possession of a plot of land that houses the Guyana Softball Association on Carifesta Avenue. Yesterday, a number of Ministry of Education officials descended on the site and broke off the locks that were placed on the main gate of the facility.The locks were placed there by association executives to prevent Ministry officials from gaining entry into the ground.The Association President,attorney-at-law Cammie Ramsaroop, contended that the matter is still before the court,China Jerseys, and that it is to be heard this Tuesday in the law court.Yesterday,Alan Quine Jersey, Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, along with the Permanent Secretary (PS) of that Ministry, Phulander Khandai, were at the location and instructed their men to break the padlocks and take possession of the premises.As this was unfolding the Vice President of the Softball Association, Mr Idris Deen, arrived on the scene and reprimanded the Minister and his officials about their actions.Deen said that the actions of the Ministry were high handed and a clear demonstration of a failure of that Ministry to follow due process.An irate Deen said that he is at a loss to understand the haste by that Ministry to occupy the plot even as the matter is before the court and a determination is to be made.The actions by the Ministry caused very heated exchanges between the Ministry’s PS, Phulander Khandai and Deen.At one point Minister Baksh had to restrain his PS even as he (Khandai) and Deen were in each others faces. Minister Baksh told Kaieteur News that his Ministry was taking over the land, since an earlier injunction by the association was discharged. He acknowledged that there is another matter but he could not state definitively why he was not awaiting the outcome.However, he said that his Ministry will be issuing a detailed statement very shortly on the issue. The Minister said that he is willing to abide by the court’s ruling when that becomes available at the end of that case.Baksh also said that he was advised by the lawyers representing his Ministry to take possession of the plot.
