… Health professionals to be honouredThe Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), through its Institute of Health Science Education (IHSE), will be hosting, for the first time ever, a scientific conference.The forum is slated for Sunday at the Ocean View Convention Centre, Liliendaal on the East Coast of Demerara, and will be held under the theme “Furthering Higher Clinical Training.”The agenda will include presentations on 11 local research papers on various health topics. These include risk factors associated with hypertension in Guyana; the outcomes of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy at GPHC; diabetic foot disease: data and development at GPHC; prevalence of hip fractures at GPHC; vaginal birth after Caesarean section.The feature presentations will be delivered by Mr. Deen Sharma, Guyanese Urologist of International renown, and Professor Ivor Crandon, Neurosurgeon, University of the West Indies.Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy is expected to declare the conference open and address the forum, as will Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran.At a press conference held yesterday, Minister Ramsammy said that the conference will become an annual one, where Guyanese doctors together with doctors from other countries will have an opportunity to present their findings from medical research.Minister Ramsammy also noted that the conference will be accompanied by the publication of Guyana’s medical scientific annals.“So Guyanese researchers and researchers from the region and around the world will have an opportunity to publish their work, which will in the end see the publication of a journal in order to mark the occasion,” Ramsammy said.Meanwhile, the conference will be followed by a cocktail and banquet for members of the medical community.
