We must take into consideration the message we will be sending to the people should the motion be ignored,” the Opposition member asserted.Despite his seemingly compelling arguments, the Speaker made it clear that such requests for the House to be adjourned should fulfill three absolute requirements as outlined in the Standing Orders. He said that such requests should be definite, urgent and of public importance.Dr. Scotland said that the request by Chand only fulfills two of the indispensable criteria—definite and of public importance.The House Speaker said, “Indeed the matter is a definite one and it is of public importance. But based on the reports we have seen, the closure of the Wales Estate will take effect at the end of the year. He noted that page 37 of Volume One of the Report says?”the COI does not recommend the closure of any estate at this time”.He noted that the CoI in reflecting on closure of estates at page 30 of Volume One of its report said?”They took into account the current state of the economy which lacks vibrancy, with awareness of the problems in the rice industry, the low market price of gold and the level of ‘unemployment’”“At page 31 the CoI report said,?”the effect of closing any estate without planning and adequate notice to cane farmers has serious consequences, not only for the employees and private farmers but for the communities as well”.The Opposition member said that the decision can be seen as an act of betrayal by the Government.He added, “GuySuCo advised GAWU at a recent meeting that those workers who will not be absorbed at Uitvlugt will be deployed to some new economic venture which will utilize the cultivation of Wales Estate.
