Possibilities unfolded for hundreds of young people on Friday at the University of Guyana (UG) during this year’s Career Day. Held at the Turkeyen Campus, each year the event sees hundreds of school children engaging in a learning experience that may point them down a particular career path. The University’s Faculties and Schools set up booths and exhibits to give a taste of their specialties to the visitors and to encourage them to consider careers in their respective fields. But UG is not the only organisation looking to get their hands on these eager young minds.Several companies and agencies were also invited to showcase their services and products in an effort to let students know that not only can they study in a certain field but that there will be work for them in that field after they leave school.During the opening ceremony held at the George Walcott Lecture Theatre, Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Lawrence Carrington spoke to more than 200 secondary school children on the vistas that lay before them.Professor Carrington told the students of the need for more professionals in many developing fields such as aquaculture and forestry fields that will expand in the wake of policies and legislation such as the Low Carbon Development Strategy which responds to the growing threats posed by climate change. He spoke of the creation of new jobs to meet the demands created by new growth in the economy and he encouraged the young people to not just look at the mainstream professions but to focus on the opportunities created by those ‘off the beaten-path’ positions and jobs. But for those students intent on following the mainstream, Professor Carrington still had words of advice. He told students that if they were to study law, they should think beyond criminal and corporate law; and should consider environmental law and other types of legal practice. His position was that the students should focus on the knowledge that can be garnered from their education and how best that knowledge can be used to help loved ones. He also encouraged the students to not be constrained by what they saw on display either but to stretch their imaginations past the offerings and see the possibilities beyond them.Professor Carrington added that although the degrees and programmes on offer at the university are varied and wide they still do not represent the full gamut of all that can and should be offered by a University, especially a national University, but he noted that the institution continues to work towards meeting the demands of the nation. He also highlighted the fact that the students who do become a part of the institution can be assured of a solid undergraduate foundation in whatever field they choose to study.Students of the Guyana Technical Institute showcase their projects and skills.Delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony was Michael George, 2010 valedictorian of the University. George who was a recipient of the coveted President’s Medal for being the best graduating student in his year achieved a 4.0 (or perfect) Grade Point Average (GPA) in his pursuit of a degree in Chemistry from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He now serves as a lecturer in his former faculty passing on his knowledge to others.George told the students that Career Day is a medium for the transmittal of many things. He spoke of the career paths that the students will be allowed to see on display, the use of the event as a forum for the recruitment of young people to work in the many companies and agencies that take part in the event. He encouraged the students to take advantage of all that was on offer and told them that they needed to work towards making themselves more marketable. He also urged them to take their education seriously and to approach it with a challenging, curious and enquiring attitude, telling the students to not accept all that is given to them as gospel but to make sure that they know what they are being taught and its relevance to their world around them.George also took the opportunity to ‘sell’ his alma mater,Cheap Jerseys China, touting the variety of activities that a student of the University can engage in outside of academia. Some of the agencies that were engaged in the event were the Guyana Water Authority,Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale, the Bureau of Standards, Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Guyana Defence Force,NFL Jerseys China, Guyana Energy Agency,Cheap NFL Jerseys, Guyana Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security.A number of private companies such as Banks DIH, Digicel, Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry,Cheap NHL Jerseys Online, Neal and Massy Guyana Ltd,<a href="http://www.wholesalenflj
