– ready to work mutually with Unions and AdministrationAlthough it is prepared to facilitate a resolution to the strike action at the University of Guyana (UG), theMinister of Labour,Cheap Jerseys From China,Dr. Nanda GopaulMinistry of Labour will however not be initiating this move.? This assertion was yesterday made by Minister of Labour,NFL Jerseys China, Dr Nanda Gopaul, who in an invited comment to this publication yesterday made clear that “the Ministry will not do anything; we will try to work mutually between both parties.”Moreover, he noted that his Ministry is keenly awaiting a sign from either side,Cheap NFL Jerseys, that is, the Unions that represent the UG workers and the University’s Administration, to bring an end to industrial action that has entered its fifth week.As evidence of its willingness to facilitate a resolution, the Minister said that his Ministry on Friday facilitated a meeting even as he pointed out that “we are speaking informally with the Unions,Wholesale NFL Jerseys, but the University Administration is still adamant and insisting that they (workers) go back to work before talks.”Based on the informal discussions that were had, the Minister intimated to this publication that “we are hoping to get a feedback from the Unions to see what we can do to make the process move along.”While reports reaching this publication suggest that an informal offer of a 10 per cent salary increase was proposed for the striking UG workers, the Minister yesterday said that he was not aware of this development.President of the University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU) had a day earlier told this publication, that while several executive members of the two unions – the UGWU and the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) – had taken strike action to the Berbice Campus on Friday, a meeting was called by the University’s Negotiating team together with the Ministry of Labour and saw the attendance of some Union representatives.According to the UGWU President, information filtered from that meeting suggest that a member of the University’s Negotiating Team, Mr Odinga Lumumba, made a 10 per cent salary increase proposal for workers. But according to Haynes, as far as he is aware, the offer was not an official one. He moreover noted that “I don’t know with whose authority he (Lumumba) was speaking…we are still waiting for a formal offer and we will not accept one unless it is a serious, solidified one.”“There hasn’t been any offer; we are still talking about resumption, jerseys from china,” said Minister Gopaul as he denied awareness of even an informal offer to the Unions in recent days. The Minister in continuing his comment to this publication speculated that there might be persons trying to resolve the issues at the University but “we are not au fait with any offer made by UG.”He therefore noted that “we are hoping to get a feedback from the Unions to see what we can do to make the process (returning UG to normalcy) move along. When we get the feedback we will then try to contact the University Administration and take it from there.”When asked if the prolonged industrial action at the national university is seen as a worrying development, the Minister would only say “given the nature of the strike and given the issues involved, having heard the Unions and having heard the University’s administration, these things do happen in industrial disputes but we are hoping for some movement from both parties so that we can have a resolution.”Although industrial action at UG commenced with a sit-in at the University’s Turkeyen campus, it subsequently morphed into full-fledged strike action with workers staying away from their regular duties to retaliate a breakdown in negotiations for a 60 per cent salary hike, cheap jerseys, other benefits and improved working conditions. The Unions subsequently altered their demand to a 25 per cent per year increase over a three-year period. The latter demand was one intended to counter the offer proposed by the University’s Negotiating Team which had offered a five per cent for this year, and 10 per cent per the following two years. The University’s offer was rejected by the workers and subsequently withdrawn by UG Vice Chancellor, Professor Jacob Opadeyi, who cautioned that the industrial action be halted before the furtherance of negotiations.Meanwhile, students of the University have also been vocalising their concerns about the tertiary institution ranging from the lack of classes to the need for improved facilities. Speaking of the on-going industrial action, President of the University of Guyana Students Socie
