The Guyana Metal Recyclers’ Association (GMRA) is not in favour of the full reopening of the scrap metal trade. The Association believes Government’s current restriction on the trade allows the sector to progress smoothly without destruction of companies and individuals’ properties.This is according to Desmond Sears, Head of GMRA,Cristian Pavon Jersey, who said that since the restriction, exporters of scrap metal have been trying to put their businesses in order to meet the rules and regulations of Government. Moreover, they have been making responsible purchases to ensure the limited opening of the trade is not disrupted again.In April 2011, Government banned the local scrap metal trade, citing vandalism as the main reason. And, everybody has been cooperating because no one wants the sector to be closed again, he added.Sears believes if the sector is reopened, scavengers would destroy properties such as metal gates and tombs. He noted that exporters are opting to purchase from large companies that sometimes advertise for bids.He enlightened that on the international market, the scrap metal trade has slowed and the price is dropping.
