All threats of industrial action have been placed on the backburner, at least for the time being,Kevin Love Jersey, following a cordial negotiation meeting on Tuesday between the University of Guyana (UG) workers’ Unions and the Administration. In an invited comment to this publication yesterday President of the University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU), Mr. Bruce Haynes, said that while there is hope for better communication, the meeting was one that reflected small but amicable progress.Since ending five weeks of industrial action recently, the Unions – the UGWU and the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) – were able to meet with the University’s Negotiating Team on two previous occasions but claimed that the outcome was not favourable. This state of affairs the unions had linked to the absence of UG Vice Chancellor, Professor Jacob Opadeyi,Cheap Throwback NBA Jerseys, as according to Haynes, no concrete action is taken in his absence. At the meeting on Tuesday which saw the attendance of the Vice Chancellor, Haynes noted that “there was small but cordial progress; it was quite amicable.” The forum saw the Administration sharing information relating to the financial state of the University for the past year.Haynes had previously asserted that the Vice Chancellor owes it to the Unions to share the University’s situation and “let us decide if we are going to stick with a 10 per cent,Womens Nike Air Max 270 Coral Stardust Shoes, or a five per cent or a seven or eight per cent; we need to know what the position is and let us decide…he hasn’t done that and that is not negotiation.”“He is dictating to us…I would say to him just put it out there ‘I can’t do this or I can’t do that’…” outlined an evidently upset Haynes last week as he went on to point out, that since the resumption of negotiations the University has not put a counter offer on the table.Workers had resumed work with a promise of a 10 per cent interim increase pending the outcome of continued negotiations. The Unions were advocating for a 60 per cent across the board increase for workers.“We are trying as much as we possibly can, not to nit-pick literally about everything…students are getting short-changed, we are getting short-changed but the Administration of the University has not been short-changed in anyway…none of them have lost anything…” said Haynes as he noted that “going on strike is not an easy thing.”Professor Opadeyi had told this publication that while the Unions were advocating for a greater increase, the University was not in a position to offer more than 10 per cent. In fact he went on to explain that such a process “is not an easy matter” adding that “you have to look at your income and expenditure. Right now there is no Parliament in session so you can’t even say that I can give them this, we still have to wait on the Government…we are still a State University and that is what people don’t understand.”He made this disclosure as he informed of Government’s commitment to grant the University $800 million in financial support to clear its financial deficit. Moreover, he noted that “any increase that we offer has to be approved by Government; if we were private sector it would be different, so we have to be very prudent in the increase that we give because we don’t want the University to get back to the days of deficit.” Even with this support,Air Max 90 Essential White And Black Womens, he noted,Nike Tns Cheap Online, that the University can only meet its utility costs in addition to a 10 per cent increase for workers. While the Unions were accepting the financial disclosure offered by the Administration Tuesday,Anthony Stolarz Jersey, Haynes said that more attention will now be directed to improving non-financial benefits for workers. “We are working together,” said Haynes of both negotiating sides. Moreover, he informed this publication that previous concerns about the level of talks has been somewhat appeased thus, the Unions are no longer contemplating any form of industrial action to further retaliate inaction on the part of the University.
