She accomplished the feat on Wednesday last.Guyana’s latest centenarian was born on 14th October 1915 at No. 28 Village, West Coast Berbice in a community known as ‘Water Log’ in those days because it was constantly flooded by water from the Abary River. She was the second of two children. Her brother, Victor was one year older.Her father Herbert Emanuel Blair was a rice farmer while her mother Doris Sears was a housewife. She attended the Number 28 Primary School where she reached 4th standard, which was the highest class at school in those days.The goodly lady who is a member of the Seventh day Adventist Church, Cumberland, East Canje, celebrated her cherished milestone with a simple ceremony with family, church members and friends at the Little Rock Suites Hotel in New Amsterdam.Born,Andrea Barzagli Jersey, Doris Juene, she was married twice. Her first marriage, while she was still a teenager, was to William Thom, a Pork-Knocker. Reminiscing, she told the media operatives that that marriage ended as a result of domestic violence. She recalled that she and husband had a scuffle and her father came in at the same time and saw and gave him one cuff and he fell. He was knocked cold and regained consciousness sometime afterwards. “My father told him that his eyes pass him to be hitting his daughter in front of him.” The union ended not long after that.Her second marriage was to C.V Juene, a distinguished Post Master. That union resulted in her living in several areas in the county as her husband was frequently transferred to different Post Offices. She had five children; three from her first marriage and two from her second. Two are alive to celebrate the milestone with her. Her frequent travels throughout Guyana with her husband whilst engaged in her seamstress endeavour also gave her much fame.She was described as a mother of many because of her tendency to take in and care for many relatives, friends and nieghbours who came her way.Attorney at Law and former Opposition Leader Robert Corbin was among those in attendance. Speaking at the ceremony as a family and a friend, Mr. Corbin mentioned how happy he was to have known and be a close associate to Mrs. Juene and her husband, who were distinguished citizens in their younger days.? Corbin said any country that has persons reaching a century and also a number of senior citizens should be in good hands because they would be around to guide the youths and gave them much needed advice.Also speaking at the ceremony was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the New Amsterdam Hospital, Colin Bynoe, who represented Social Protection Minister Volda Lawrence,Alex Sandro Jersey, who was unavoidably absent.? Bynoe stated that the Government of Guyana is blessed to have such a person as “My Dear” around. He wished her God’s richest blessing and the best in the future and even longer life on behalf of his Excellency,Arturo Vidal Jersey, President David Granger, Minster Lawrence and the rest of the Government.? “She has not only passed three scores and ten, but she has scored three scores and 10 plus 30 undefeated. Excellent work,Arjen Robben Jersey,” he intoned.Bynoe also presented a gift to Sister Juene of behalf of the Minister and Government of Guyana.Fragile and unable to move around, the woman had her fair share of travel having visited a few countries during her younger days.? She is hoping to see and meet his Excellency President David Granger soon. She also hopes to be given the medical passage to hop over to the United States of America to see to visit her great grand children who she has never seen.
