– as UG’s Faculty of Health Sciences seeks to accredit more programmesBy Sharmain Cornette“Young people are looking for professional degrees and are no longer attracted to mere degrees in biology and chemistry,Cheap NBA Jerseys China,” said Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr Emanuel Cummings. He said that the University of Guyana has been forced to upgrade some of its programmes to meet the growing demand. In addition to the offering of a Bachelor’s of Science Degree (BSc) in Medicine the University now offers BSc programmes in Surgery and Dentistry. As one of the most recent programmes offered by the Faculty, Dentistry which commenced in 2006 will churn out the first batch of graduates next year, Dr Cummings revealed. Five students currently undertaking the programme are expected to comprise that batch.Among its upgraded offerings is the Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Medical Technology which saw the first batch of 25 persons graduating at the university’s most recent convocation.“Some students did the entire four-year programme but some who had Associate Science Degrees or Diplomas were required to do a one-year or two-year programme in order to get this degree which was offered for the first time at the university.”This programme, Dr Cummings regarded as very important as the university was able to employ at least two of the graduates. The institution, to some extent, arrested a shortage of lecturers.“One of the problems we had here is not having lecturers, particularly in this programme…It was very serious. Being able to employ some of the graduates has been good for us. We could not have done that before because we cannot employ people with an Associate degree. So now by offering the degree we are able to do so.”And since the commencement of the BSc Medical Technology programme the university’s intake has increased substantially,Cheap Air Max, Dr Cummings disclosed. The previous intake had seen more than 150 applying for the programme as against 80 or 90 persons who had applied for the Associate degree or Diploma programmes.“With the degree programme we have been able to increase our matriculation. Persons were not so attracted to the Diploma and Associate degree programmes but they are more attracted to the degree programme as it is more marketable,” Dr Cummings confessed. He theorised that since young people are looking for more professional degrees they are no longer aiming to obtain degrees in just any subject area. Instead,Wholesale Jerseys, they are setting their eyes on the new professional degrees that are becoming available at the university.“They are running for them. I hate to say it,Amir Johnson Jersey, but Science students are no longer looking for simple degrees anymore…I think we have out lived that era,” the Dean speculated.Meanwhile, measures are in place to have all programmes offered within the Health Sciences Faculty be fully accredited.Already the BSc in Medicine has been accredited and is recognised regionally. According to Dr Cummings the BSc Nursing programme is next on the list for accreditation. The two-year nursing programme, which has been ongoing for some time now,College Jerseys, is offered to persons who have completed the Registered Nursing Programme offered by the local health sector.“Right now it is nursing and soon it will be pharmacy,Cheap Adidas Hockey Jerseys, then dentistry, so eventually all the programmes in the Health Sciences Faculty will be accredited,” Dr Cummings asserted. He disclosed that the university has been visited by officials from the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions whose task it is to accredit the programmes. It is anticipated that within a year or two the nursing programme will be up for full accreditation, Dr Cummings noted, allowing local nurses to be able to practice anywhere in the Caribbean without doing an examination. In the meantime, the university is working on its own to improve the quality of its programme through quality assurance programmes. “Certainly we know that our facilities need to be improved. There is no question about that. We just had a quality assurance workshop and I am certain these measures will be increasing the quality of our graduates,” Dr Cummings asserted. But according to the Dean, graduates from the university have not been having a hard time finding jobs overseas thus suggesting that the programmes offered here are of a high quality. He noted though that despite of where a person is trained there are some countries like the United States that will always require them to write the State Board examination.Accordin
