NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – The Department of Education in Region Six has awarded the top performers at the 2010 National Grade Six Assessment, Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).The sixth annual ceremony was held at the Little Rock Suites in New Amsterdam last week.Top CSEC student in Region Six - Pulmattie Rabinchand; Top male CSEC student in Region Six - Dave SarranEighteen-year old Eileen Selina Marray of New Street,Cheap NFL Jerseys, New Amsterdam topped the country at the 2010 CAPE.Pulmattie Rabinchand, of the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School, was named the top CSEC student in Region Six with 64 points. She secured nine passes with distinction and two grade one passes.Dave Sarran and Sarah Elizabeth Khemraj both from the New Amsterdam Secondary School (NASS) with eight passes with distinction, two grade one passes and one grade two gained 62 points each.They were followed by Safia Shafali Ahmad and Rosav Devi Persaud Sukdeo together in the next position. Both of them are from the NASS.Safia Shafali Ahmad attained 11 subjects with six passes with distinction,Cheap NFL Football Jerseys, four grade one passes and one grade two while Rosav Devi Persaud Sukdeo with 14 subjects secured one distinction,Wholesale Stitched Jerseys, four grade one passes, seven grade two passes and two grade three passes. Bibi Sheniza Khan of Skeldon Line Path Secondary and Elizabeth Dianne Fraser of Berbice High School shared the next spot.Bibi Sheniza Khan achieved ten subjects of which eight are with distinction and two grade one passes while Fraser got 12 subjects, three of which are with distinction, five with grade one, three grade two and one grade three.The other high flyers who were awarded are Reaz Kayum,Cheap China Jerseys, Radika Bissoondatt, Asheer Khan and Toolaram Tekeshwar.The top 12 National Grade Six Assessment students were Kessa Kendall of St. Therese’s Primary, Victoria Harry of Port Mourant Primary, Simon Bactawar, Alisa Chaturi, Jehad Ramjohn,Supply NFL Jerseys, Shabana Usman, Romeo Lynch, Nadia Nankumar, Auden Hope, Salina Kattick, Shamar Hooper and Chantay Waithe.They were each given a trophy and certificate. Region Six Education Officer Shafiran Bhajan said that 16,961 candidates across Guyana wrote the National Grade Six Assessment this year.Of this,Cheap NFL Jerseys, 2,910 were from the 55 primary schools in East Berbice/Corentyne including Siparuta/Orealla on the Corentyne River and Baracara. St. Therese’s and Port Mourant Primary Schools prominently featured in the top 100.This year the total mean score by subject for Region Six went up from 80 percent last year to 85 percent in 2010.She indicated that a comparative analysis of the CSEC results for Region Six, for the 2008 to 2010 period, reveals that in 2008 there were 56 percent passes with grades one to three, in 2009 the figure rose to 63 percent and this year it stands at 68 percent. With grades one to four passes, the overall percentage is 87 percent this year.Mrs. Bhajan explained that the upward spiral in terms of results can be attributed to the amount of intervention at all levels. There are now more training programmes for teachers, increased access to curriculum resources, additional text books and other aids are also available.The schools at all levels are constantly monitored for effective delivery of education. There has also been more support for parental involvement in the education of their children.Presidential Advisor, Gail Teixeira, said that the Government of Guyana can continuously invest in this particular sector but the rate of success would be greater if parents play a more pivot role in the learning process of their children.Sending a child to school is just one aspect but children need supervision at home to ensure revision outside of the school. Guyana is on brink of change though it may not appear so at a glance. However, a country cannot move forward unless its people are adequately equipped with the necessary education and skills.Ms Teixeira called on the students not to narrow their career choices down to the traditional paths but bear in mind the expanding and emerging sectors in the country such as construction and tourism.Another key sector is agriculture. Climate change and global warming are threat to food security.Chairman of Region Six Zulfikar Mustapha said that in 2011 changes will be seen in the education sector.In the National Budget, this year $21.4 billion was budgeted for the education sector but Government is not seeing the level of performance to match the hefty allocation.
