Government is moving aggressively toward the ultimate goal of safer communities by expanding the concept of community policing across the country. The most recent intervention in this regard, saw the recent establishment of the West La Penitence Community Policing Group (CPG).This is the 43rd group within A’ Division.Addressing the residents at the launching ceremony, Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee reminded that community policing is not a “one-night” activity, it needs the commitment of residents to make it a lasting crime fighting strategy.He said that the launching of the group is the first step in the journey towards successful community policing.The Minister said that South Georgetown, in which La Penitence is located, is one of the most densely populated areas in the city and as such, a lot of activities are conducted. For this reason he said, the formation of a CPG is seen as strategic in assisting to decrease criminal activities.“We are committed to establishing a group in every community across the country,” Minister Rohee said.He also urged the members to work collaboratively with other groups in South Georgetown to strengthen the impact of community policing.He noted the “every group formed, irrespective of size, is an achievement to the community policing system.”The Minister refuted critics who are of the view that community policing has defeated its purpose,Wholesale Jerseys Free Shipping, and said that there are many hardworking and committed persons in the system.“Guyana is one of the few countries in the Caribbean, where community policing has achieved so much success and where the Central Government is investing more and more resources to enhance the system,” the Home Affairs Minister posited.He stressed on the importance of visibility of the groups in the neigbourhood so that they will be able to derive more support and cooperation from the residents in the area.
