This year, over 20 companies in the mining industry participated in the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) three-day National Mining Exhibition, displaying new and old technologies and services in the sector.The Exhibition was held on the lawns of the Ocean View International Hotel, East Coast Demerara, from August 22 to 24, and included heavy duty machinery, and safety gear. The concentrator is effective in separating the mercury and preventing it from entering the creeks.He emphasized that the Knelson Concentrator is quite expensive but the ‘wearing’ parts are readily available on the market. This year the company displayed its oil, Ambra Lubricants along with heavy duty machinery and safety gear. For instance, IKS Services Unlimited is a new service company. This company provides guidance services to persons wishing to commence exploration in Guyana.According to Donnett Butters, Operations Manager, the company is new and it saw the exhibition as the perfect opportunity to market its service.Butters revealed that persons who visited the booth were impressed and expressed genuine interest in the service.Sustainable mining is a major concern of the GGMC and this was portrayed in its Environmental Division booth. According to Trevor Semple, Environment Officer, the displays focus on proper environment management, occupational safety and health within the sector and sustainable mining practices.He posited that the Division is tasked with educating miners on various safety and health practices, monitoring and inspecting small and medium scales mining operations and providing technical support to miners.Semple stated that miners who visited the booths were receptive and some had prior knowledge about sustainable mining, as GGMC visits mining camps.
