She educated visitors on the benefits of a healthy diet. The woman who did a brief presentation for the gathering advised persons that they should consume foods from each of the six food groups. The nutritionist explained that in order for our bodies to function properly we have to put good things inside. She said that food from the food groups should be taken in the right proportions.There was a table which had the foods on display. They were also posters that detailed different methods of preparing nutritious meals.According to her, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Most persons skip it. She emphasized the benefits of having a healthy breakfast and gave tips on what this meal should consist. Persons suffering from high cholesterol were advised by the nutritionist to use less oil and margarine when cooking and to also avoid fatty foods like avocado (pear).A mini library which was set up by the Housing Health Education Services, attracted much attention since it contained books on various life topics. A representative from the organization, Kwame Goodluck, pointed out that food is life medicine.He added that having a healthy diet is not about going to fancy restaurants and buying the most expensive things on the market.“Simple diets are what matter”, he stressed.Also on display were books on depression, suicide, health and sex, medicinal plants and addiction.Free medications were also dispensed.Meanwhile, in observance of Guyana’s jubilee independence, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Health hosted a mini-health fair on Saturday for the members of the Ruimveldt Children’s Aid Centre (RCAC).The fair which aimed at bringing awareness to non-communicable diseases and mental health attracted about two dozen of the center’s members who were each tested for high blood pressure; non-communicable diseases are non-infectious or non-transmitted diseases.Director of Youth, Gillian Frank explained that the initiative behind the activity was to educate persons on the importance of being healthy and the need for them to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Frank pointed out that majority of the children that were tested had no knowledge of blood pressure.Retired Nurse, Ms.Saygon who has been working part time at the center for a number of years, said that the Ruimveldt Child Aid Centre is a safe haven for children after school.
