General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Donald Ramotar, has joined with all the progressive people in Guyana and further a field in commemorating the 30th anniversary of the assassination of the renowned Guyanese historian and revolutionary, Walter Rodney.“At the time of his death Rodney was only 38 years old…Yet his impact on African and Caribbean studies is highly recognised.”Walter Rodney (left) and Cheddi JaganRamotar said that upon Rodney’s return from Tanzania in 1974 he immediately joined the anti-dictatorial struggle.“In the process he exposed the nature of the regime and ridiculed the PNC dictatorship and its maximum leader…Rodney being an Afro-Guyanese blunted the PNC dictatorship racist weapon and showed how harmful the dictatorship was for the whole country and all its people.”He stressed that the PPP and Cheddi Jagan always enjoyed a close and fraternal relationship with Rodney.“Today we are proud of the fact that many of the things we struggled for together have been achieved. His was a working class family, his father was a tailor and his mother a seamstress.After attending primary school, he won an open exhibition scholarship to attend Queen’s College as one of the early working-class beneficiaries of concessions made in the field of education by the ruling class in Guyana to the new nationalism that gripped the country in the early 1950s.While at Queens College young Rodney excelled academically, as well as in the fields of athletics and debating.In 1960, he won an open scholarship to further his studies at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. He graduated with a first-class honours degree in history in 1963 and he won an open scholarship to the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. This was a period of great political activity in the Caribbean as the countries begun their post colonial journey.
